How sports coverage on Canale 5 is changing with the new program from a longtime face of the network: "We feel the need to broaden our horizons, as all sports fans are doing."

Mediaset has decided to change its Sunday evening program, adding coverage of other sports to its long-standing focus on football and Serie A. This evolution has led to the birth of what is intended to be a new program, " Pressing – Nel cuore dello sport," while maintaining a reference to the name that has always been synonymous with sports on these networks, ever since the days of Marino Bartoletti and Raimondo Vianello as hosts. After 13 years, a longtime figure on the network, Alberto Brandi , returns to the channel's Sunday program (Channel 5, late evening), explaining the reasons behind this move: "We feel the need to broaden our horizons, as all sports fans are doing, including football fans. Football isn't in its best form and is jostling with other sports to capture the passion of its fans. It's precisely by following this popular wave that the new Tottis and Del Pieros are called Sinner and Egonu."
Even Mediaset has declared that Italy is no longer a Republic based on the game of football.
Let's remember that football has always had a prominent place in our DNA, in our Sunday programs, but even back in the days of Controcampo, when we featured the epic story of Valentino Rossi rather than that of Tomba, we were accustomed to broadening our horizons. And so we will begin to do again. Extraordinary days for Italian sport like last Sunday will get the space they deserve on Pressing.
Will we start by talking about the weekend's goals?
Absolutely, also because it's a right we've earned and want to honor. Ours isn't a revolution, but an evolution that's evident in the program's subtitle, which remains "Pressing," but adds to the heart of sport. We'll cover other sports using our own language. Historically, we've tried to say on Sunday what others said on Monday, but today we'll have to push ourselves even further and consider the comments that once would have been made on Tuesdays.
Are you ready to get off the couch and get back on video on Sunday evening?
"Yes, also because I'll be able to count on the help of Monica Bertini, now the sporting face of Mediaset's major sporting event, who will continue to be the lady of our Sundays."
Massimo Callegari, who was an excellent host until a few Sundays ago, will not be seen again.
"Massimo, besides being a friend, is an extraordinary professional: his presence has also played a key role in Pressing's success. He remains a tremendous asset, and we'll see him again on our 1 p.m. newscast: starting Monday, he'll be commentating on the most important events in the studio. We'll be hearing from him again soon, because he, along with Riccardo Trevisani, is the lead voice of Mediaset's commentary, which this year, in addition to the exclusive Coppa Italia, will also include six big La Liga matches thanks to an agreement with DAZN."
How will the new Pressing differ from Domenica Sportiva, which stole some of your voices?
"Rai has one target audience, Mediaset has another, as do Sky or Dazn. Each has its own language, although perhaps the differences of the past no longer exist. We will try to follow our mantra, to go further with our comments, to give rhythm to the discussion, which has become a formula used by everyone, and for us it's a source of pride because we've been using it for a long time." We kick off on a Sunday devoid of other sports (the World Athletics Championships and the Motorcycle World Championships are on), but packed with great football. A soft start for the new Pressing team, too, as they await further swept-away action from Sinner and further victories for the Italians, who have found a new stage.
